Creamy chicken and asparagus pasta: Perfect with bacon

1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp dried basil
½ tsp dried oregano
¼ tsp dried thyme
¼ tsp salt, plus more for sauce
¼ freshly ground black pepper, plus more for sauce
12 oz. penne pasta
1 lb. asparagus
1 ½ tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 ¾ cup milk, 1% recommended
¼ cup cream or half and half
3 oz. Neufchâtel cheese
1/3 cup finely shredded parmesan cheese
4-5 slices bacon (optional)
